Do you know that butterfly wings are covered in microscopic scales? This inspired the combination of materials above: pretty butterfly-patterned paper with pewter fish leather at the spine. The leather has a wonderful scale texture.
Take a look at Kellie’s Fine Leathers Etsy shop to see her selection of fish and eel leathers. They are great for a variety of projects.
I’m usually a bit behind the times. In this case, I just put together a planner for the year. It combines two different bindings and various materials, including printed kozu paper, twill tape and a vintage index card divider. The inside pages are printed from our Droplet planner pdf. Now I can start to get some things done!
I was recently inspired to push my current knowledge of Japanese binding to a new level. This type of binding moves past the boundaries of function and more in the direction of form. There is so much potential here! I’m excited to try more.
The cover of this book is cut from a UCLAx poster.

Come on over to peruse the work of hundreds of artists at the upcoming Renegade Craft Fair. Ben and I will be at booth #137. Ben is working on some new illustrations and I whipped up a batch of handmade books for the occasion. This is always a well-curated fair with many great handmade items to select from.

Today is the day! After months of work, At Home With Handmade Books is finally available! Working with the folks at Shambhala Publications has been a pleasure. I am very happy with how everything turned out. It is available through Shambhala as well as through most major book retailers, including Amazon.
This year I finally created a planner that is available for purchase by anyone who is interested (or whoever gets to them first)! I already sold all but four at the Renegade Holiday Craft Fair in Los Angeles this weekend. The final four are up and available on Etsy. You can see all of the designs on Flickr.
The design is based on the planner that I created for myself last year, so the page designs as well as the cover and binding design are all time tested.
The pages are sewn to vintage book straps, so each planner is one-of-a-kind. Details and dimensions are mentioned in the Etsy listings.
Happy New Year!
One week and counting! Renegade Craft Fair will descend upon downtown Los Angeles on the weekend of July 24 + 25. Ben and I are sharing booth #28. We can’t wait to see you there!
